Search for Missing American Student in Japan Intensifies
James ‘Weston’ Higginbotham, a 20-year-old student from Auburn University, went missing in Kyoto, Japan. His parents are appealing to locals to help in the search effort.
Weston’s mother, Nancy Higginbotham, posted on Facebook a map showing the area already searched by Japanese police. The map, a Google Maps screenshot, highlights a wooded region in the Yamashina mountains, marked by a red circle indicating the searched zone.
In her post, Nancy urged experienced hikers to expand the search beyond the current zone, particularly in less-traveled mountain areas and trails. She emphasized the need for caution, especially for those not familiar with the local terrain or the Japanese language.
It could literally cost you your life,a local warned, advising inexperienced hikers against embarking without proper preparation, such as having a map app, adequate clothing, notifying others of their route, or starting their hike too late in the day.
Who is Weston Higginbotham?
Weston was vacationing with his family when he disappeared. He was last seen on May 29, around 8:15 p.m., at Yamashina Station, based on CCTV footage. The family had been exploring Kyoto separately that day, with Weston navigating the city independently. Known for his excellent navigation skills and physical fitness, he previously completed an Ironman triathlon.
By evening, the family noted his phone was off and unresponsive to texts, unusual behavior for him. By 2 a.m., Nancy and her family reported him missing to local authorities.
Adding complexity to the situation, Japan faced a severe typhoon midweek. The storm hit Wakayama prefecture, prompting flood warnings and causing heavy rain in the Yamashina region, complicating search efforts.
Anyone with any information is encouraged to contact Kyoto police or the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate.
This situation remains fluid, with updates expected as more information emerges.
