The United States and its allies in the Shield of the Americas have firmly condemned attempts to destabilize Bolivia’s government, which is led by President Rodrigo Paz. These nations issued a statement declaring their support for the democratically elected government amid rising social unrest.
The member countries of Shield of the Americas denounce ongoing efforts to overthrow the legitimately and overwhelmingly elected government of President Rodrigo Paz in Bolivia,
the statement emphasized. We stand with Paz’s democratic government as it fights back against attempts to drag Bolivia backwards through cynical efforts to prevent the delivery of food, medicine and other vital supplies to the Bolivian people through fake road blockades.
The statement highlighted the illegitimacy of replacing democratic decisions with mob rule, urging accountability for those using illicit funds, including drug trafficking money, to fund protests. It encouraged those with genuine grievances to engage in dialogue with the government instead.
The joint statement was issued by the State Department along with countries such as Argentina, Chile, and Dominican Republic. This comes as Bolivia faces significant social unrest, with protests impacting La Paz and other major cities, primarily due to economic challenges like inflation and fuel shortages.
The economic constraints have been intensified by the resignation of Bolivian Defense Minister Marcelo Salinas and controversial policies by President Paz. His land reform bill and removal of fuel subsidies have sparked backlash, raising gasoline prices dramatically.
In the backdrop of these issues, accusations of incitement by drug traffickers have been made by the Trump administration. Additionally, former President Evo Morales is advocating for early elections, intensifying the call for political change.
Amid these developments, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has affirmed the U.S.’s commitment to supporting Bolivia, emphasizing the need to prevent the resurgence of narco-terrorist influence.
This situation continues to evolve, with international stakeholders closely monitoring and supporting stability in Bolivia against the backdrop of ongoing challenges.
