The ongoing struggle between Iran and Israel to establish dominance in the Middle East is notably affecting Lebanon. Both nations have manipulated the region to serve their objectives, leading to increased tension.
On a recent Sunday, Lebanon became the focus of renewed conflict. Hezbollah, a Lebanese armed group supported by Iran, launched an attack on Israel. This action prompted Israeli retaliation in the southern suburbs of Beirut, a Hezbollah stronghold, escalating the situation. Iran responded by targeting northern Israel following the strikes.
Experts suggest that the leaders of Israel and Iran have marked a decisive boundary across Beirut, intensifying tensions and raising the risk of a broader conflict.
Lina Khatib, an associate fellow at the Chatham House research institute in London, highlighted that Lebanon is ensnared by competing interests from Iran and Israel, setting the groundwork for further escalation.
Despite efforts by President Trump to conclude the U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran, Tehran demands that any peace efforts should also encompass Lebanon. Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has dismissed this connection, opting to focus on an ongoing Israeli campaign against Hezbollah.
Netanyahu stated that Iran and Hezbollah attempted to establish ‘a new equation’ by responding to Israeli attacks on Hezbollah in Beirut. He deemed this situation ‘unbearable and unacceptable.’
