"60 Minutes" has long been a staple of American journalism. Since its debut on CBS in 1968, it has become the most-watched television-news program in the country. With renowned journalists like Mike Wallace, Ed Bradley, Lesley Stahl, and Anderson Cooper, it has maintained a significant presence in the industry.
Scott Pelley, who was part of CBS for 37 years, recently left the network amid controversy. Throughout his tenure, he served as the White House correspondent, anchor of the "CBS Evening News", and a "60 Minutes" correspondent. He was dismissed following several tumultuous events at CBS over recent years. These events include a contentious financial settlement with President Trump concerning a "60 Minutes" segment, the network’s sale to David Ellison, and the appointment of Bari Weiss to lead CBS News. Weiss, a founder of The Free Press and former New York Times Opinion staffer, had no prior television-news experience.
Pelley’s firing followed significant changes within CBS News, including the appointment of Nick Bilton as the new head of "60 Minutes". Pelley clashed with Bilton in a staff meeting. Following his departure, Pelley and other "60 Minutes" correspondents, who were also dismissed, accused Weiss of editorial interference and bias. Both CBS News and Weiss have denied these claims.
In his first interview since leaving CBS, Pelley discussed specific incidents he considered interference and shared his recent experiences at the network. He expressed hopes for improvements during this challenging period at CBS, where he spent much of his career.
In recent weeks, several key correspondents and leaders at "60 Minutes" were dismissed. Leading up to these changes, reports suggested an overhaul was imminent. Pelley remarked that no one anticipated the "Black Thursday massacre", resulting in the complete removal of senior staff.
Tanya Simon, the first woman to serve as executive producer of "60 Minutes", was also among those affected. Under her leadership, the show achieved a rare nine percent audience growth this season. Online presence also surged by 190 percent, reaching 2.5 billion views. This success marked a high point for the broadcast.
Pelley remains hopeful for positive developments at CBS during these changing times.
