If your child is starting kindergarten this fall, preparation is key. Longer days will be filled with unfamiliar faces and new skills. We spoke with Dr. Aimee Ketchum, a pediatric occupational therapist who created the STEM Starts Now Digital Child Development Program, for advice. Here’s what you need to know to get your child ready.

Essential Skills for Kindergarten Readiness

Even if you feel you’re behind in getting your child ready, remember, preparation starts from birth. Through educational play, reading, and teaching good manners, you’ve been assisting your child’s development. Consider these skills as your child approaches kindergarten.

Soft Skills

Soft skills are crucial. Dr. Ketchum emphasizes that while letters and numbers are important, a child must be able to separate from parents comfortably. They should also manage self-care tasks like putting on coats and shoes independently.

Social-Emotional Skills

Children develop social-emotional skills by interacting with peers. They learn to take turns, develop empathy, and understand others’ feelings. These interactions also enhance language skills.

Motor Skills

Ketchum notes that children should be capable of walking flat-footed, running, hopping, and kicking a ball. They should hold a pencil with a three-finger grip, write their name, and color within lines. Children should also practice using scissors and classroom tools like glue sticks and rulers.

Academic Skills

While not the most critical, some academic skills are beneficial. Children should spell their names, recognize letters, and understand basic number patterns. They should count to 20, recognize numbers up to 10, and perform simple addition and subtraction.

Preparing for Kindergarten: Practical Steps

Social Preparation

To build social skills, encourage playdates and participation in groups and activities. Introducing structure and turn-taking games can also help.

Emotional Preparation

Children should recognize and express their emotions. Talk openly about feelings as they arise. Teach your child to adapt to changes and identify unsafe situations.

Daily Reading

Reading daily is crucial. Use books and real-life examples to teach letters and numbers. Simple activities such as using sidewalk chalk or pointing out math concepts at grocery stores can make learning fun.

Arts and Crafts

Arts and crafts enhance learning, sequencing, and motor skills. Encourage activities that involve cutting, drawing, and coloring to improve dexterity and creativity.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is preschool necessary for kindergarten preparation?

Preschool is helpful but not essential. If unavailable, involve your child in social and educational activities at home. Read books and encourage interactive learning and play.

What if my child feels scared about starting kindergarten?

Anxiety is natural. Visit the school beforehand to meet teachers and explore the building. Make the experience delightful by simulating school activities at home and including your child in back-to-school shopping.
