President Donald Trump addressed the issue of rising inflation on Wednesday while speaking to reporters in the Oval Office. He made a controversial statement, saying, “I love the inflation,” in response to the latest report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).
Inflation and the high cost of living continue to be significant political issues as the 2026 midterm election approaches. The recent conflict in Iran has triggered a surge in gas prices across the United States. While tackling inflation was a key aspect of Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign, his approval ratings have been impacted negatively due to persistent high prices.
The BLS report indicated that prices increased by 0.5 percent in May, a slight decrease from the 0.6 percent rise in April. However, annual inflation accelerated to 4.2 percent from the previous month’s 3.8 percent, marking the fastest year-over-year increase since April 2023.
Upon being queried about his concern over the inflation figures, Trump expressed no concern. He elaborated, “The numbers were great. You know what I really love? I love the inflation. You know why? Because as soon as this war is over, you know I can say it now.” He revealed actions taken in the conflict, citing the removal of millions of barrels of oil, actions not widely known even by Iran until his disclosure.
The economic impacts, according to Trump, are justified to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons. He confidently proposed that oil prices, currently at $85 a barrel, will lower to pre-war levels once the conflict concludes.
Kush Desai, a spokesperson for the White House, explained to Newsweek that Trump was highlighting how the May Consumer Price Index (CPI) showed a decline in prices for essentials like prescription drugs, dairy, and cars despite energy market disruptions. Desai emphasized that the administration’s policies aim to reduce expenses for Americans.
Polling data from FocalData reflects a different public sentiment, with Trump’s approval rating on inflation at a record low. Approximately 69 percent of Americans expressed disapproval of Trump’s approach to inflation, while only 18 percent supported his handling of the matter. This data was gathered from 1,719 respondents between May 29 and June 1.
Democrats responded promptly to Trump’s comments. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer criticized Trump’s statement, accentuating it as an indication of his disregard for the public. Newsweek has reached out to the White House for further comments.
