Puppy’s Solo Adventure at Home Sparks Crate Training Debate
A pet owner decided to see how their puppy would act when left home alone, but soon regretted this decision as seen on their pet camera. The owner, Heber, left her 3-month-old Pomeranian named Marky at home for a brief 30-minute errand. Although hesitant to leave Marky in a crate, Heber knew it was inevitable.
Upon checking the pet camera, Heber discovered a solo protest by Marky against being left alone. The footage shared on Instagram (@markyandmilly) shows the tiny puppy persistently crying, seemingly calling his family back home. Heber expressed regret over the decision, saying, “It must have started the second we left!”
The situation escalated when Marky managed to escape the crate, hopping over the top of it. This prompted Heber to “retire the crate” as Marky demonstrated it was not suitable for him. The change proved beneficial.
“We decided to let him free roam,” Heber mentioned. “And honestly, he’s been a much happier king ever since. No more jail breaks needed!” The family expanded with the addition of a new dog, a “little sister” to keep Marky company.
Crate or No Crate?
Crate training is a popular method for many dog owners, especially for puppies, yet it remains a topic of debate. Experts emphasize that crates should serve as a safe space, not a punishment.
According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), crates can act as a dog’s personal area for relaxation, sleep, and a sense of security. They also aid in house training and preventing destructive behavior.
However, crate training does not suit every dog. The AKC advises against forcing dogs into crates or associating them with punishment, which could foster negative feelings. Instead, dogs should develop positive associations with the crate, encouraging them to use it willingly.
