The largest World Cup in history begins in North America, igniting excitement among global soccer fans. Matches and ceremonies start Thursday and continue into Friday. From Mexico City to New York and Toronto, millions will watch as 48 teams compete in the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup. This expanded format marks the first change since 1998 and is the first instance of three countries jointly hosting this sporting spectacle.
Opening Ceremonies of the 2026 World Cup
Eleven cities across the U.S., Mexico, and Canada will host matches, each with its opening ceremony. The first Group A match between Mexico and South Africa occurs Thursday at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. Shakira and Burna Boy will perform “Dai Dai,” the official song of the World Cup, along with other artists from FIFA’s inaugural album.
In Toronto on Friday, Canada meets Bosnia and Herzegovina at the revamped BMO Field, expanded to seat 45,000. The opening acts include Alanis Morissette and Michael BublĂ©. In Los Angeles on Friday, the U.S. Men’s National Team plays Paraguay, with celebrations led by Katy Perry and Future.
First Set of Matches and Historic Rematches
Following Thursday’s ceremonies, Mexico and South Africa will compete at 3 p.m. ET, re-enacting their 2010 matchup. Later, South Korea faces Czechia near Guadalajara. Friday kicks off Group B with Canada’s match against Bosnia and Herzegovina. In Los Angeles, the U.S. challenges Paraguay at 9 p.m. ET, in their first home World Cup appearance since 1994.
Security Measures for the Tournament
The U.S. is increasing security for the World Cup, with the FBI deploying tactical teams across host cities. These teams, trained with other agencies, aim to ensure a safe environment for players and fans.
Security preparations include coordination by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, focusing on national security rather than immigration enforcement. A Somali referee slated for the event faced entry denial into the U.S. due to unspecified “vetting concerns.”
Stadium Regulations and Fan Encouragement
FIFA’s code of conduct lists prohibited items, but recent changes permit one sealed, disposable water bottle per person due to heat concerns. Despite high ticket prices, fans like those from the American Outlaws show enthusiasm, even from less favorable seating areas.
Teams and Odds to Watch
As betting expectations surge, economist Joachim Klement highlights the Netherlands as a noteworthy contender. Past finalists in multiple tournaments, the Netherlands exhibit strong defense and team balance. The U.S.’s placement in Group D shows potential to advance though soccer remains less popular in America compared to other sports. Betting predictions suggest Americans may wager $3.1 billion this year, a substantial increase.
