Justin White and his son Gavin rushed home as tornadoes tore through Northwest Indiana Thursday night. Justin recalled Gavin asking about the storm as they hurried to safety. Once home, they parked quickly, and Gavin joined his mother in the basement. Justin captured a brief video before the windows shattered, then sought shelter himself.
The National Weather Service confirmed tornadoes swept through the area, following similar events in Illinois. Thousands lost power. Thankfully, no fatalities were reported in affected communities, although a semi driver was injured in Merrillville.
Extent of Damage
An EF3 tornado with wind speeds between 136 and 165 mph caused significant damage in Kouts. Weather service crews assessed damage across Merrillville, Hebron, Kouts, and other areas. Gusts as high as 76 mph were recorded, and flooding impacted regions like Crown Point.
NIPSCO reported over 52,000 customers without power, down from over 86,000. Residents in severely affected areas might remain without power for over a day.
Local Response and Recovery
Scott Pelath, from the Kankakee River Basin and Yellow River Basin Development Commission, inspected potential debris impacts on water flow. Though heavy, precipitation levels were manageable, with cleanup efforts underway.
Impact on Communities
Significant property damage was reported in South Porter County, particularly along Baums Bridge Road and Ind. 49 near Kouts. Justin White described his home partially damaged yet structurally intact. His friend Ryan Kats, however, suffered losses at his sod farm.
Community members rallied to assist each other. Edward Schrey, a neighbor, noted how the damage followed a path, affecting some areas while sparing others.
Porter County Sheriff Jeff Balon praised the resilience and dedication of first responders and community members. Officers increased patrols to deter possible criminal activities following the storm.
Merrillville Struggles with Aftermath
In Merrillville, many homes, including Maria Williams’, faced severe damage. Her property, damaged overnight, became visible as daylight revealed the extent of the destruction. Andrean High School suffered considerable damage to its structure, affecting the school’s summer plans and routines.
The school appealed to the community for help and took a cautious approach to ensure safety before reopening. The Diocese of Gary pledged support for recovery, emphasizing solidarity in rebuilding efforts.
Portage and Surrounding Areas
Portage saw widespread tree damage and flooding. Mayor Austin Bonta and Police Chief Michael Candiano coordinated emergency response efforts, ensuring medical needs were met during outages.
Transit systems like the South Shore Line and Gary Public Transportation Corp. faced disruptions, with services suspended due to road conditions and downed power lines.
As communities recover, support from organizations like the Red Cross offers a lifeline. Residents remain hopeful, drawing on their strength and solidarity to rebuild and restore normalcy.
