The Prime Minister of Pakistan announced that the United States and Iran have agreed on the wording of an agreement aimed at ending their conflict in the Middle East. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stated that the two countries have finalized a text. Pakistan, taking a leading role in the mediation, is collaborating with both sides to finalize this agreement.
Sharif expressed optimism on X, remarking that peace has never been this close before. The breakthrough follows recent exchanges of fire between Iran and the US, alongside Israel. These confrontations risked escalating into a full-scale war, exacerbating tensions in the region.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi reiterated the closeness to an agreement in his X post. He was echoed by US President Donald Trump, who has mentioned the proximity to a deal multiple times lately. Launched by the US and Israel earlier this year, the war has disrupted oil and gas shipments from the Persian Gulf. A temporary ceasefire has been in place since early April.
Iran’s Nuclear Program and Peace Efforts
Araghchi indicated that following the agreement’s initial signing, further details related to Iran’s nuclear program will be worked out. This will happen over a 60-day period. The conflict, influenced by tensions over Iran’s nuclear ambitions, could be resolved if the agreement progresses. The US and Israel have expressed fears of Iran’s program culminating in nuclear weapons, whereas Tehran insists on peaceful purposes.
A senior official from the US administration, who wished to remain anonymous, revealed that the agreement aims to begin the process of removing Tehran’s highly-enriched uranium. This step is vital for ensuring long-term peace.
Strategic Strait of Hormuz and Sanctions
A major point of contention is Iran’s effective control over the Strait of Hormuz, a critical channel for global oil and natural gas shipments. The conflict has disrupted transit, impacting energy prices worldwide. The emerging agreement involves reopening this strait to ease the global supply chain.
Iran desires a system allowing it to charge for ship transits through the strait, a practice previously criticized by the US and others as breaching international law. Meanwhile, the US Central Command reported intercepting Iranian drones targeting commercial shipping in the area.
Sanctions and Regional Stability
Key elements of the upcoming agreement include the phased lifting of sanctions on Iran and releasing its frozen assets. Regional officials anticipate a signing ceremony soon, subject to approval from officials in Washington and Tehran.
Though Israel isn’t part of the negotiations, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has consistently voiced concerns that Iran must not obtain nuclear weapons. Defense Minister Israel Katz emphasized their expectation for the US to protect Israeli interests, particularly against Iran’s missile capabilities.
Pakistan, under its army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir, leads the negotiation efforts, with support from Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Egypt, and Qatar.
