The U.S. Southern Command conducted a military operation that resulted in the death of Hector Rusthenford Guerrero Flores, nicknamed “Niño Guerrero.” He was the alleged leader of the Venezuelan criminal organization Tren de Aragua.
In a statement on Truth Social, President Donald Trump described the strike as “swift and lethal,” highlighting the operation’s alignment with his campaign promises to tackle international criminal groups. He pointed to the murder of Laken Reilly as an example of the crimes linked to this gang.
“Tren de Aragua is one of the world’s most bloodthirsty terrorist organizations,” Trump stated.
The operation was reportedly conducted with cooperation from Venezuelan officials. The Pentagon was contacted by Newsweek for further details.
Key Points
Trump’s statement linked the strike to broader policies aimed at strengthening border security and dismantling criminal networks operating across the American continents. He criticized past border policies under President Joe Biden, asserting they enabled criminal activities against U.S. citizens.
The post included video footage of a green-roofed building being struck, followed by flames and smoke.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York had previously filed charges against Guerrero Flores, attributing to him leadership of the Tren de Aragua as a transnational criminal enterprise. Prosecutors claim the organization engaged in drug trafficking, firearms offenses, extortion, and violence, often coordinating with narcotics networks to smuggle cocaine into the U.S.
Further Allegations
Authorities allege Tren de Aragua operated beyond Venezuela, with active cells in the Americas and Europe. It reportedly maintained control through threats and corruption.
U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton emphasized Flores’ key role in transforming the group into a global threat, being responsible for numerous criminal acts. He stated, “In the Southern District of New York, over 30 associates of Tren de Aragua face federal charges. We aim to dismantle these cartels that endanger our communities with drugs and violence.”
Clayton reflected New Yorkers’ expectations for security and justice, reiterating the commitment to combatting such criminal organizations.
