Bob Dylan, now 85 years old, opens up about the experience of aging in an article for The New York Times. He shares insights into how his perceptions have evolved with time.
Dylan reveals, “My favorite thing about being in my 80s is that you outlive the clocks that have been chasing you.” He describes this as a newfound freedom, relinquishing the illusion of control.
“You don’t chase the parade anymore. You’re an old king from some vanished country. You’re harder to program.”
He emphasizes a shift in priorities, “You’re not rushing to become anything and you’re not haunted by things that you did.” In the twilight years, he reflects on the stark realization that much of what seemed important may not have held the significance he expected.
Nevertheless, Dylan acknowledges the challenges of aging, stating, “The old fire in your heart still tells you to do this and that, but your body says we already did it.” He notes how nothing surprises him anymore, suggesting it’s a mixed experience, devoid of illusions.
He elaborates on a bittersweet awareness, realizing understandings that could have changed the past. “At 80, you know that time doesn’t move forward. It stands still. We’re the ones that move.”
Despite these reflections, Dylan remains active, using his time wisely. He continues to perform live and is currently touring North America. His next concert is scheduled for Wednesday, June 17. Details are available on his official website.
