France endured a challenging start in their 2026 FIFA World Cup opener against Senegal. The initial 45 minutes were not memorable for Les Bleus. However, the tide turned in the second half.
Kylian Mbappe, the current Golden Boot holder, demonstrated his prowess beginning in the 66th minute. Michael Olise provided a superb through ball, allowing Mbappe to score his first goal of the tournament. He later added another in stoppage time, securing France’s 3-1 victory with a powerful shot from outside the box.
Mbappe’s performance propelled him up various historical leaderboards. As reported by ESPN Insights, he overtook Olivier Giroud, claiming the record for most goals by a French national team player with a total of 58. Additionally, The Athletic noted that Mbappe became the first to achieve five World Cup matches with two goals each.
His achievements continued as he moved past France’s Just Fontaine and Argentina’s Lionel Messi, tallying 14 goals in World Cup history. Speculation suggests Mbappe might surpass Germany’s Miroslav Klose and Brazil’s Ronaldo, who lead with 16 and 15 goals respectively, by the tournament’s conclusion.
Despite Messi also finding the net in Argentina’s match against Algeria, the debate over the ultimate World Cup performer continues. The comparison highlights that while Mbappe has scored 14 goals in three tournaments, Messi has reached this number in six.
Both players possess one World Cup title, which is the defining measure of success. Mbappe debuted successfully in 2018 when France secured their first World Cup since 1998. However, Argentina’s victory in 2022, led by Messi, ended France’s hopes through penalty kicks. In that final, Mbappe achieved a hat trick, while Messi scored twice.
This World Cup is crucial for Mbappe’s future legacy. As he emphasized to FOX’s Jenny Taft, feeling the pressure is essential for achieving greatness. He stated, “At the end of the day, you need to feel this pressure to do something special. It’s my objective, it’s my goal, when I wear this jersey to put my country at the top of the world.”
