Electoral Defeat
U.S. Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi’s dreams of representing Illinois as a senator ended abruptly when he lost the primary election to Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton on March 17. Despite years of planning and millions of dollars fundraised, Krishnamoorthi faced a new reality. He now prepares to leave Congress after 10 dynamic years, which were marked by a pandemic, an insurrection, and impeachment proceedings.
In an interview with the Daily Herald, he said, “We have to move forward. We must look to the next challenge and see how we can serve a higher cause.” Regarding Stratton, he expressed confidence in her saying, “She’s going to be a great senator.” As he approaches his final 12 weeks in office, Krishnamoorthi remains dedicated to addressing vital issues.
Pending Responsibilities
Among the tasks ahead are solving numerous constituent concerns. Many of these involve immigrants whose cases have stalled due to federal government changes. “These are individuals who have legally followed the process and are facing tremendous uncertainty,” noted Krishnamoorthi.
His departure involves packing up offices in Washington, D.C., and Schaumburg, filled with mementos and photos. These range from poses with former President Barack Obama to family pictures of his three children.
Political Journey
Primary Defeat and Resurgence
In 2012, Krishnamoorthi faced an earlier defeat in a Congressional race against now-U.S. Sen. Tammy Duckworth. However, he rebounded by winning the seat in 2016. With a name like Subramanian Raja Krishnamoorthi, he simplified interactions by using “Call me Raja.” This tagline became a staple in his campaign commercials.
Krishnamoorthi took office on Jan. 3, 2017, with his family present, marking one of his happiest moments.
A Rocky Start
Entering Congress as a new representative, he faced a challenging political climate. Republican majorities in the House and Senate were bolstered by President Donald Trump’s election. On Jan. 28, 2017, he joined protests at O’Hare International Airport against Trump’s executive order limiting entries from seven Muslim-majority countries. “It was harrowing,” Krishnamoorthi recalled, as he aided Chicago-area Muslims with green cards who had been detained.
Significant Investigations
Serving on both the Committee on Oversight and Reform and the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, he witnessed crucial testimony. Krishnamoorthi questioned former FBI Director James Comey and Trump’s former attorney Michael Cohen, probing Russia’s alleged election interference.
His inquiries during Cohen’s testimony in February 2019 went viral, culminating in further investigations. Krishnamoorthi’s questioning revealed ongoing investigations by the Southern District of New York.
Capitol Riots
The events of Jan. 6, 2021, were fraught with danger. Krishnamoorthi recounted Capitol Police evacuating his office due to a nearby pipe bomb. With staff, he barricaded in the Rayburn House Office Building during the riots. The Congressman’s swift voting following the unrest was a proud moment for him.
Afterward, Krishnamoorthi endured threats, resulting in police protection at his home. “It was a bad time,” he shared, relieved when it ended years later.
Senate Campaign Challenges
Despite a strong campaign for a 2026 Senate run, Stratton’s entry posed a unique challenge. The political tension, fueled by President Trump, polarized voters. Governor JB Pritzker’s financial backing strengthened Stratton’s position.
Krishnamoorthi acknowledged the test this posed to his strategy but found pride in rallying widespread support throughout Illinois.
Campaign Impact
The campaign unfolded amid unrest from Operation Midway Blitz, a federal immigration enforcement campaign. Krishnamoorthi noted public anger towards Trump influenced the electoral campaigns significantly.
Family served as his anchor during this challenging phase. “It’s disappointing, but one has to decide whether to revisit past issues or advance toward future resolutions,” he said.
Campaign Finances
A Federal Election Commission report revealed Krishnamoorthi’s campaign raised approximately $31.6 million, spending about $31.5 million, with $74,000 remaining. He stated campaign obligations are yet to be settled.
Congressional Legacy
From modernizing the U.S. education system to securing $46 million in community grants, Krishnamoorthi views these as key achievements. Additionally, he initiated investigations into youth vaping and heavy metals in baby food, resulting in new regulations.
Resolving over 15,000 constituent service cases remains his proudest accomplishment, including tracking down lost Social Security checks and aiding a U.S. military interpreter fleeing the Taliban in Afghanistan.
Future Prospects
“I’m not sure yet,” Krishnamoorthi mused about his plans post-Congress.
While he joked about offbeat career advice, like gaming or rideshare, he affirmed his call to public service, deriving satisfaction from aiding people through his team.
