Rachel Goldberg-Polin, the mother of Hersh Goldberg-Polin, shared heartfelt insights with NBC News about her son, an Israeli American. Hersh’s life was characterized by its ordinariness, she remarked, despite the tragic circumstances surrounding his death. He was among the six hostages whose bodies were found in a tunnel beneath Rafah, Gaza, in September 2024, after being captured at the Nova music festival in southern Israel three years prior.
Born in the United States, Hersh relocated to Israel with his family at the age of seven. Rachel emphasized the tendency to mythologize young people who lose their lives tragically but insisted that her son was special in his ordinariness. She described Hersh as a perfect match for her, illustrating his life as one filled with beauty and imperfections.
In her reflection, Rachel highlighted the essence of Hersh’s character, noting, ‘I think what’s extraordinary about Hersh is that he is totally ordinary.’ Her sentiments capture the complexity and fullness of Hersh’s humanity, painting a portrait of a young man who, for his mother, embodied both beauty and flaws.
