Ohio Senate Race: A Crucial Battleground
Ohio’s Senate race emerges as a significant battleground. Republican Senator Jon Husted faces strong criticism from GOP Representative Max Miller, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal. Husted is running against former Senator Sherrod Brown, a Democrat, who has maintained a slight lead in recent polls. The outcome on November 3 could influence which party controls the U.S. Senate.
Polling Data on Husted vs. Brown
Husted trails Brown by a narrow margin in the Ohio Senate race. The Cook Political Report identifies the race as a toss-up. A New York Times and Siena University survey shows Brown leading by 3 points, with 49% planning to vote for him compared to 46% for Husted. This poll included 616 likely voters, with a margin of error of ±4.5 percentage points.
A Suffolk University poll mirrors these findings, also giving Brown a 3-point edge, 47% to 44%. It surveyed 500 likely voters with a margin of error of ±4.4 percentage points. Additionally, an InsiderAdvantage survey had Brown ahead by one point, 44% to 43%, polling 1,200 likely voters with a margin of error of ±2.83 percentage points.
Max Miller’s Controversy and Political Battle
Miller faces allegations of abuse from his ex-wife, Emily Moreno, leading to calls from Husted for Miller to resign. Husted emphasizes that anyone involved in domestic violence is unfit for Congress. Moreno accuses Miller of assault and using a firearm against her. Miller denies these accusations, maintaining joint custody of his child and refuting Moreno’s claims as baseless.
Reelection Challenges for Miller
Miller’s reelection race against Brian Poindexter is also competitive. The Cook Political Report calls it a toss-up, with an August poll showing Poindexter ahead by 8 points. The Tavern Research survey polled 635 likely voters, indicating Poindexter leads 54% to 46%, with a margin of error of ±4.8 percentage points.
Prediction markets, like Kalshi and Polymarket, favor Democrats in both Ohio races. As of Tuesday afternoon, markets gave Brown a 62% chance to defeat Husted and Poindexter an 81% chance to defeat Miller. Though indicative of trader sentiment, prediction markets are not always reliable predictors of election outcomes.
Significance of the Ohio Senate Race
The Ohio Senate race is crucial for midterm elections, influencing the Senate’s control. With a Republican 53-47 majority potentially at risk, Democrats need to flip four seats to gain a majority. Ohio is viewed as a possible state for Democrats to gain ground this election cycle. A Brown victory would challenge Republican efforts to maintain a majority.
If Husted wins, Democrats must seek victories elsewhere in states leaning more conservative. The Senate Leadership Fund plans a $14 million investment in Ohio to support Republicans. Former President Trump has also been active in Ohio, campaigning to bolster Republican efforts in the state.
