Arkansas consistently tops the list as the most pro-life state in America, according to Americans United for Life. Despite this designation, new data highlights significant challenges in providing adequate maternity care for women and children in the state. The March of Dimes report reveals that 33 of Arkansas’s 75 counties lack essential maternity care facilities. This accounts for 44 percent of counties categorized as maternity care deserts.
In these counties, there are no hospitals or birth centers offering obstetric services. Additionally, there are no available obstetric clinicians for routine prenatal appointments. For residents in these areas, accessing necessary care often means traveling long distances. It is common for expectant mothers to drive an hour or more for basic prenatal visits.
This situation underscores a critical need for improved healthcare infrastructure and resources. Strengthening access to maternity care is vital for supporting the health and well-being of women and children in affected areas.
