Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche advanced toward Senate confirmation on Sunday. He officially withdrew a contentious $1.8 billion called the “anti-weaponization fund.” This decision refines tax protections in President Donald Trump’s IRS settlement.
A spokeswoman for Senator John Cornyn, R-Texas, announced an agreement after talks with Senator Thom Tillis, R-N.C. Both senators had previously delayed Blanche’s nomination. The Senate Judiciary Committee plans to vote on Tuesday.
Blanche stated that he had engaged with various committee members and senators over recent weeks. He confirmed that concerns and questions were addressed. Blanche emphasized positive discussions, noting that the Department values engaging with Congress productively.
The withdrawal included parameters ensuring tax protections in the settlement only apply to past filings, not future ones. Blanche’s statement followed his appearance at the Senate Judiciary Committee’s confirmation hearing on July 15, 2026.
