Karl Bushby’s 28-Year Journey
Karl Bushby, a former British paratrooper, is on an extraordinary journey. After 28 years and four continents, he is close to completing his global trek. Bushby’s journey, which started in 1998, has brought him back to England.
On his return, Bushby swam across the English Channel, marking another achievement. His journey now spans more than 30,000 miles through 29 countries. His mission began in Chile on November 1, 1998.
Bushby set strict guidelines: no use of motor vehicles and no returning home until completion. His route traversed South America, North America, and the Bering Strait.
Challenges and Perseverance
Throughout his expedition, Bushby faced significant challenges. Visa restrictions and financial crises posed delays. COVID-19 lockdowns and geopolitical tensions added further obstacles. Bushby relied on book sales, speaking engagements, and sponsorships for funding.
A recent swim across the Caspian Sea was a significant win. A production company has supported his journey for years.
Bushby’s latest goal was reaching England via the Channel Tunnel. Safety concerns led him to swim the Channel instead. Floating under the starlit sky provided a welcome distraction from physical pain.
The Final Leg
Now, Bushby has about 250 miles left to walk. He aims to reunite with his mother in Hull. This final segment follows years of perseverance and adventure.
Bushby reflects on the 28-year journey, seeing it as a personal and physical achievement. Completing the trek in early November will mark a significant milestone.
