Alex Murdaugh expressed gratitude after the South Carolina Supreme Court overturned his conviction and sentencing related to the murders of his wife and son. His defense attorneys shared this during an interview following the court’s decision.
Attorney Jim Griffin communicated Murdaugh’s disbelief, stating, “He didn’t believe that it could be possible. He was very gracious, thankful, and said ‘Jim, I’m seeing, I’m reading it, and it’s still hard to believe.'” Griffin added that Murdaugh was relieved to shed the label of convicted murderer.
The Supreme Court’s Decision
The South Carolina Supreme Court unanimously decided to overturn the conviction and order a new trial for the June 2021 killings of Murdaugh’s wife, Maggie, and their 22-year-old son, Paul. This came after revelations that the court clerk in the original trial influenced the jury.
Colleton County Clerk of Court Rebecca “Becky” Hill compromised Murdaugh’s right to a fair trial by undermining his credibility with the jury. The verdict was seen as a denial of justice, so a retrial was necessary.
Murdaugh, 57, will remain in prison due to convictions on state and federal charges linked to defrauding his former law firm and clients. Prosecutors intend to retry Murdaugh for the murders soon and may appeal the court’s decision.
Defense Team Insights
Defense attorneys Jim Griffin and Dick Harpootlian expressed optimism about the potential for a new trial. They asserted Murdaugh’s innocence and dismissed the notion of a plea deal.
I respect this court, but I’m innocent. I would never under any circumstances hurt my wife, Maggie, and I would never under any circumstances hurt my son Paul Paul.
They highlighted new information received from people supporting Murdaugh’s innocence. Though Griffin didn’t provide specifics, he mentioned that the information related to third parties and possible motives.
Financial and Legal Details
Melvin, during the interview, questioned how the defense team was compensated for representing Murdaugh. Griffin revealed that they were paid for the first trial, which cost $600,000, but stated that they are not currently being paid and were committed to seeing the case through.
Jury Perspectives
Amie Williams, a juror from the original trial, was surprised by the Supreme Court’s decision. She didn’t believe Hill influenced her. Contrarily, juror Mandy Pearce believed Hill’s actions affected Murdaugh’s chance for a fair trial.
Hill admitted her misconduct last year and received probation. She showed sealed court exhibits to a photographer and lied about her actions in court. Hill expressed remorse for her mistakes.
