Algeria’s Turnaround and Its Impact
Algeria’s second-half surge denied Jordan their first World Cup victory and ensured Argentina won Group J. Despite losing to Austria 3-1 on their debut, Jordan impressed by holding firm for much of the match. Continuing this resilience, Jordan took the lead against Algeria, despite being outmatched in the first half.
Nizar Al-Rashdan found the net with a skillful finish after a mishap from Musa Al-Taamari. Algeria goalkeeper Luca Zidane, son of Zinedine Zidane, managed a touch but might regret not stopping it entirely.
With that lead, Jordan had a fleeting chance to win the group by defeating Argentina. However, goals from Nadhir Benbouali and Amine Gouiri secured a 2-1 win for Algeria. This marked Algeria’s first World Cup victory in over a decade and confirmed Argentina’s top spot.
Did Algeria Deserve the Win?
Algeria persistently attacked throughout the game and nearly led by multiple goals before Jordan’s unexpected score. Algerian strategies included long passes aimed at captain Riyad Mahrez, who made well-timed runs but faced challenges getting control in key moments.
Jordan’s defense, led by goalkeeper Yazeed Abulaila, was noteworthy for its discipline and organization. Despite Algeria’s skillful passing, their main successes came from set-piece goals through corners.
After Algeria equalized, they were the clear aggressors. Jordan struggled to keep up their intensity and retreated defensively. Gouiri’s decisive goal followed his quick reaction to a second chance opportunity.
Overall, Algeria appeared more solid compared to Jordan, except for Zidane’s miss on Jordan’s goal. Jordan mainly relied on counterattacks but couldn’t maintain their efforts. Statistically, Algeria’s superiority was evident. They had higher expected goals (1.8 vs. 0.7), doubled Jordan’s shots (17 vs. 8), and dominated possession (71% vs. 29%).
Assessing Zidane’s Performance
Luca Zidane sought redemption after a challenging World Cup debut against Argentina. Yet, he faced trouble during Jordan’s goal. Nizar Al-Rashdan’s shot slipped past Zidane’s grasp, similarly to Messi’s previous goals that Zidane couldn’t fully prevent.
Zidane showed promise by making crucial saves against Argentina, including a noteworthy stop against Lautaro Martinez. His international record holds strength with five clean sheets since his debut last year.
Taking to the field mask-free against Jordan, his efforts contrasted Yazeed Abulaila’s performance. Abulaila ultimately faltered as Algeria pressed, allowing goals from Benbouali’s header and Gouiri’s follow-up at corners.
Messi’s Position and Future Matches
By overcoming Jordan, Algeria not only revived their World Cup prospects but also secured Messi’s Argentina as Group J’s leader. Had Jordan maintained their lead and then defeated Argentina, they could have advanced, albeit it was unlikely.
Jordan’s exit from the tournament is confirmed, paving the way for Algeria’s final group match against Austria. The victor there will face Group H’s winner in Los Angeles on July 6, with Group H currently led by Spain and Uruguay. If a third-place team achieves sufficient standings, they will challenge a group winner from varying cities, including Atlanta and Vancouver. Details are expected to be finalized over the weekend.
