American Researcher Faces Espionage Trial in China
American researcher Youlin Chen, known for his work on North Korea’s nuclear tests, will stand trial in China on espionage charges. This charge could lead to a death penalty under Chinese law, as reported by his wife and advocacy groups.
Chen, 54, was detained by Chinese authorities nearly two years ago. Reuters reported this information based on statements from his wife, Yufang Rong, and nonprofit organizations that assist those believed to be wrongfully detained abroad.
High-Profile Detentions
This is the second significant detention of a U.S. citizen on espionage charges reported this year. The previous case involved Min Zin, who was arrested in June while leading a Myanmar-focused think tank in Kunming.
The timing of these arrests is sensitive in the context of U.S.-China relations. Both nations are attempting to ease ongoing tensions concerning trade, security, and technology. President Donald Trump has invited Chinese President Xi Jinping to Washington as part of efforts to improve relations.
News outlets, including Newsweek, have requested comments from the Chinese Embassy in Washington, D.C., and the U.S. State Department.
Trump Administration’s Approach
Chen was born in China but became a U.S. citizen in 2011 and now resides in Boston. Secretary of State Marco Rubio officially labeled him as “wrongfully detained” on March 19.
He lacks a U.S. government security clearance. His wife Rong, also a seismologist, claims the espionage accusation does not align with his publicly collaborative work. A statement conveyed by Eric Lebson from Global Reach emphasizes this stance.
The Trump administration has strategically avoided making Chen’s case a prominent issue, hoping it might lead to his release. Trump raised the topic during discussions with Xi Jinping in Beijing.
Rong voiced concerns that Chinese officials did not respond to Trump’s request. She suspects Chen’s conviction is predetermined and that his trial will occur behind closed doors. A conviction for espionage can result in life imprisonment or a death sentence.
Focus on Nuclear Test Research
Central to Chen’s detention is his research on seismic signatures linked to North Korea’s nuclear tests. This includes a December 2020 study for the State Department analyzing these tests from 2006 to 2017. The study used seismic data, some of which was collected in China.
Chinese authorities have interrogated Chen over 100 times about his nuclear expertise according to his wife. Despite signing the 1996 Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty, which bans nuclear tests in all environments, China, like the U.S. and Russia, has not ratified it but follows a testing moratorium.
In February, U.S. State Department officials accused China of conducting a covert nuclear test in 2020 using decoupling techniques. This method reportedly reduces seismic monitoring effectiveness and was linked to a seismic event at Lop Nur, China’s nuclear testing site.
