Recently, a significant step was taken to preserve America’s identity through a unique project. Amidst the flurry of events at the White House, the non-partisan committee America250 sealed “America’s Time Capsule” with items representing every U.S. state and territory. Unlike the Trump-backed Freedom 250 organization, America250 focuses on preparations for the nation’s 250th anniversary.
The time capsule, intended to remain sealed for 250 years, aims to reflect American viewpoints on history and the future. Rosie Rios, the chair of America250, emphasized the dual focus on the past and future, hoping future generations in 2276 will understand the care and pride of the 250th anniversary celebrations.
The capsule will be buried on July 4 in Philadelphia’s Independence National Historical Park and unearthed in 2276. The contents are expected to narrate the story of America at its 250-year mark. Contributions came from every state, Washington, D.C., and five U.S. territories. Items were also received from government officials and several America250 Partners, including Apple and the Smithsonian Institution.
“This moment is as much about the future as it is the past,”– Rosie Rios
Care was taken to exclude items that could rust or degrade, ensuring longevity. For example, Maryland’s Old Bay seasoning proposal was excluded. Contributions from states include diverse items such as poems, archival maps, challenge coins, and meaningful documents.
Selected Contributions:
- Alabama: Poems by James Matthew Wilson
- Alaska: Archival map of New Archangel and a 1927 Alaska Territory flag
- Arizona: Copper ingots, state quarter, and laser-etched challenge coins
- California: Letters, AI-generated predictions, and technological memorabilia
- Florida: Challenge coins and a Florida Senate Booklet
- Montana: Beaded artwork of landscape and bison
- Virginia: Challenge coin
- Wisconsin: Letters, an eagle feather from the Civil War, and a keychain from the Forest County Potawatomi Community
Partners like Apple contributed an iPhone 17 Pro Max, while Coca-Cola provided a bottle with a lyric sheet. Other notable donations included a pocket Constitution signed by Supreme Court justices.
America250 officials noticed a hopeful trend in the messages and items within the capsule. Tom Medema from the National Park Service expressed that the project has been uplifting, sending a message of hope for the future.
“There’s great hope in what this capsule represents and the messages that are put in it,”– Tom Medema
