The NBA season is fast approaching. If you have not been following the preseason, it is understandable. Still, the NBA preseason offers more action compared to other major sports leagues. Starters and teams participate actively, even in games that do not count towards the regular season. As the season progresses, the opportunity for strategic betting becomes more pronounced.
Eastern Conference
Last season, the New York Knicks claimed the championship. They have retained the same roster, yet winning consecutive championships is challenging. The last back-to-back champion was the Golden State Warriors when Kevin Durant was on the team, and he has since moved to three different teams.
During the Knicks’ last campaign, they defeated the Hawks, the 76ers, and the Cavaliers, eventually overcoming the San Antonio Spurs in a five-game series. While the Knicks are still a formidable team, the accumulated wear from intense seasons can take a toll.
The Philadelphia 76ers have emerged as the favorites in the East. Their lineup now features Tyrese Maxey at point, Joel Embiid at center, and recent additions, Jaylen Brown and LeBron James. James continues to excel despite his age. Health concerns persist with Embiid, but potential lineup adjustments include positioning James at center, Brown at power forward, and Anthony Simons at shooting guard. With Dean Wade and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope on the bench, the 76ers and Knicks remain the top teams in the East.
However, this does not guarantee a first and second-place finish in the regular season. Some teams prioritize the regular season more. Betting on the 76ers at +900 seems sensible, as they and the Knicks are the strongest contenders from the East.
Western Conference
The Western Conference also presents a tight race. The Spurs, last year’s finalists, lost to the Knicks. Victor Wembanyama’s performance was lackluster during the series, impacting their ability to close games. Unless Wembanyama shows significant improvement, the Spurs might not return as West representatives.
The Oklahoma City Thunder boast depth, similar to the Spurs. Both teams offer high odds, but no clear betting value. The Denver Nuggets at +2500 are an intriguing choice. With Nikola Jokic, Jamal Murray, and now DeMar DeRozan, Denver has a robust lineup and an improved bench, making them a strong contender.
Additionally, the Houston Rockets could be a surprising contender at +5000. The signing of veteran point guard Fred VanVleet, despite his recent ACL injury, could bolster their game. Should he perform well, and if the rest of the team plays up to potential, the Rockets might push further than expected.
While others might lean towards the Lakers due to players like Luka, their defensive shortcomings, even with Walker Kessler, present challenges.
In summary, wagering on the 76ers at +900, the Nuggets at +2500, and a modest bet on the Rockets at +5000 appears wise. The prospect of a Thunder and Knicks final at +1300 is appealing but uncertain.
