Republicans are focusing on a potential Senate win in Minnesota. GOP nominee Michele Tafoya is closing in on Democratic Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan. This shift has led Fox News to adjust its race predictions, favoring Republicans, just weeks before Election Day.
Minnesota hasn’t seen a Republican win in a Senate election for nearly 25 years. Tafoya, a former NFL sideline reporter, aims to change this by taking over the seat of retiring Democratic Sen. Tina Smith.
A recent Minnesota Star Tribune/KARE 11 poll shows Tafoya trailing Flanagan by only four points. Fox News Power Rankings moved the race from Likely Democrat to Lean Democrat.
“The more Minnesotans learn about me and my opponent, they see the need for change,” Tafoya said. “Minnesota needs new ideas and an independent thinker,” she told Fox News Digital.
The Flanagan campaign did not respond to requests for comment before publication.
Key Issues in the Race
The contest occurs amidst a welfare assistance fraud scandal in Minnesota, which has deterred Democratic Gov. Tim Walz from seeking re-election. This scandal has become a crucial aspect of Tafoya’s campaign against Flanagan.
Tafoya criticized the administration for large-scale fraud under Flanagan’s tenure as second-in-command. She argued that vital programs were undermined, affecting services for children and seniors.
Flanagan acknowledged the fraud and public frustration. She distanced herself from Walz, who has taken responsibility for the oversight.
The fraud has been heavily covered in news outlets, intensifying the race focus in Minnesota.
Other Campaign Points
Tafoya has addressed recent gang violence in Minneapolis-St. Paul suburbs, proposing a five-point plan to tackle the issue. She’s emphasized the need to recognize the problem, a stance she claims Flanagan avoids.
Flanagan counters by linking Tafoya to former President Donald Trump, despite Trump being unpopular in Minnesota. Tafoya distances herself by supporting abortion rights and pledges independence when necessary.
National support for Tafoya is strong, with fundraising efforts gaining traction across Minnesota and beyond. GOP leaders, including Senator Tim Scott, have noted her potential to run a strong campaign.
Meanwhile, Democrats hope popular figures like Sen. Amy Klobuchar can boost Flanagan’s chances.
Despite different strategies and support, the race remains competitive as both campaigns push towards the final days.
