Ancient Tunnel Discovery Near Jerusalem Raises Questions
Excavators have recently uncovered an ancient tunnel near Jerusalem, linked to archaeological sites from the biblical Kingdom of Judah. Announced by the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) on May 14, the tunnel discovery was near Kibbutz Ramat Rachel, an area significant to the biblical era.
The rock-hewn tunnel, approximately 164 feet long, was found during the construction of a new residential neighborhood north of Ramat Rachel. It stands around 16 feet tall and 10 feet wide. The meticulous rock-cutting reflects considerable effort and planning, indicating the resources required for its creation. The tunnel was filled with layers of accumulated soil over centuries.
Excavation directors Sivan Mizrahi and Zinovi Matskevich described the discovery as unexpected. They encountered a natural karstic cavity in rocky terrain, which developed into a long tunnel. Parts of the tunnel remain collapsed, keeping its full extent unknown.
IAA excavations in 2020 near Ramat Rachel uncovered seal impressions and structures tied to the Kingdom of Judah. Although no direct evidence links the newly discovered tunnel to that era, the proximity to notable ancient sites indicates significant historical context.
Researchers consider whether the tunnel aimed to access a chalk layer used for quarrying stones or producing lime. Evidence supporting this theory includes a shaft carved into the tunnel’s ceiling for possible ventilation and quarrying debris discovered on the floor. However, the exact purpose remains uncertain. Experts have ruled out its function as part of a water system.
Jerusalem district archaeologist Amit Re’em of the IAA noted the city’s continuous surprises with discoveries such as this tunnel. While parts of the passage remain collapsed, leaving questions about its purpose, the tunnel likely relates to ancient quarrying activities.
