Andrew Garfield consistently chooses roles that convey meaningful messages. His work in The Social Network, Under the Banner of Heaven, and the upcoming film Artificial, where he portrays OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, highlights this focus. Garfield shared with Newsweek’s Parting Shot podcast, “I think everyone’s just called to different things.”
His latest project, The Uprising, follows this pattern. Set after the Black Death, the film tells the story of a nameless ploughman in 1381 England. The character, played by Garfield, faces economic struggles under King Richard II’s rule. As a response, he leads a revolt against high taxation. This story reimagines the origins of the Robin Hood legend.
Garfield finds the ploughman embodies a universal experience. “It feels very prescient for today,” he says. “It’s an everyman’s story, a longing to reconnect to life and nature, found in the flow of a river or hot springs.” Directed by Paul Greengrass, the film reflects modern economic challenges, drawing parallels to the enduring theme of Robin Hood.
The movie urges viewers to acknowledge injustices and question power disparities. Although Garfield stresses accountability should not solely rely on top political leaders. “Real change must begin within the individual,” he asserts. “We build something new from the outskirts, reconnecting with ourselves first.” He emphasizes the need for personal transformation to inspire broader societal change.
Garfield remains committed to message-driven films while acknowledging their unpredictability. “It’s mysterious to me,” he comments, citing musician Paul Simon’s creative process analogy. The choice lies between writing about a sweater or addressing complex issues like oppression.
In The Uprising, like in his real life, Garfield happens upon impactful stories. “I’m always trying to go, ‘What’s my note?'” he explains. Projects like these affirm his artistic path, where he feels aligned with cultural currents and meaningful storytelling.
