Fundraising events vary greatly, but for Gary’s Sojourner Truth House, the recent activity involved a community walk named “Walk for Stability. Walk for Community. Walk for Hope.” The event featured a short stroll in Gary, where the executive director, Angela Paul, along with Pam King, the director of client services, welcomed participants on Saturday, June 13, 2026.
Participants raise critical dollars through peer-to-peer fundraising online and in-person,
explained Airiel Crenshaw, the volunteer coordinator. This year marks the 29th anniversary of this event.
Sojourner Truth House functions as a day center providing essential resources to at-risk women and their children. The event aimed to raise awareness and vital support for individuals and families transitioning from crisis to stability.
When participants walk, donate, or form teams, they help make vital resources possible,
Crenshaw stated. This includes housing support, food access, case management, and healing programs.
Over 200 walkers participated in this year’s event, circling the neighborhood around the house.
Mary Turner, a local resident, commented, Our residents know how important this center is and we want to support it in any way we can.
Sojourner Truth House was established by the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ in 1997 to offer hospitality, recovery, advocacy, and housing to those in need.
The Dedicated Strong Women of Embassies of Christ showcased their support with an information table at the walk. Sister Kathleen Quinn, aged 92, spoke to participants before the event started, expressing her happiness with the turnout. It’s very inspiring to see continued support for STH,
she noted. Families, community members, and local organizations participated in the event. Sherrie Greer from Dedicated Strong Women shared, We all know that Sojourner Truth House is an important staple in our community.
Sojourner Truth, whose birth name was Isabella Baumfree, was born in 1797 and became a prominent Black abolitionist and women’s rights activist. The Gary location is named in her honor, recognizing her advocacy for social justice and empowerment.
The walk spanned 1.1 miles, following a designated path beginning and ending at Sojourner Truth House. Along the way, cheer stations provided encouragement and support. Participants also enjoyed refreshments, music, community engagement, and connections with local vendors and organizations. A play area for children was also available.
Crenshaw highlighted the community’s support: The annual walk sends a powerful message that no one has to walk alone. It reflects a community that shows up, supports one another, and believes in creating pathways to hope, stability, and a stronger future for all.
she added. Proceeds from the event directly support the programs and services offered at the facility, demonstrating a compassionate community ready to assist individuals and families in rebuilding their lives.
