Archaeological Discoveries Beneath Notre Dame Cathedral Reveal Rich History
Archaeologists have made significant discoveries at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, uncovering a wealth of historical artifacts. This excavation commenced following the rebuilding efforts after the catastrophic 2019 fire. The Associated Press (AP) reported the latest findings earlier in June.
Unveiling Centuries of History
Researchers have explored approximately 13 feet underground in the cathedral’s forecourt, uncovering remnants from various periods. Among the unearthed artifacts is a 1,700-year-old Roman coin, intriguing pottery fragments, and markings that remain a mystery to experts.
The excavation has been termed the ‘dig of the century’ by French media.
- A Roman coin from the 4th century depicting Emperor Constantine.
- Medieval pottery fragments with unexplained reddish markings.
- Whole jugs and cups found in a latrine, used as a garbage pit.
Insights into Past Parisian Life
The excavation also uncovered a Roman-era doorstep reutilized as paving and medieval grain pits from the sixth to the 10th centuries. These findings paint a vivid picture of life in ancient Paris.
Valentine Breloux, an archaeologist, noted the rarity of intact ceramics and the significance of the peculiar pottery markings. Lucie Altenburg, from the Paris archaeology unit, described this project as a rare opportunity to delve deeper into Parisian history.
The aim is to uncover evidence of the Gauls, who preceded the Romans in this area. Yasmine Benali, an archaeology student, emphasized the importance of discovering layers of history beneath the cathedral.
Looking Ahead: The Notre Dame Renovation Project
This archaeological endeavor is part of a broader renovation plan for the Notre Dame square, scheduled to include trees and visitor amenities by 2028. Emily Carter, a visitor from Manchester, expressed her awe at the discoveries, stating that it revives Notre Dame’s significance.
The ongoing excavation and restoration highlight the historic depth and continuous allure of the iconic cathedral.
