Belgium Granted Right to Appeal FIFA’s Balogun Suspension Reversal

With limited time before its World Cup round of 16 match begins, Belgium can appeal FIFA’s reversal of U.S. striker Folarin Balogun’s suspension. The Athletic reports that both the Belgian soccer federation and U.S. Soccer must submit arguments to FIFA’s appeals committee by 8 a.m. ET on Monday, July 6. A ruling is expected before the match starts at 8 p.m. ET, though no guarantees have been given to Belgium.

Balogun, previously handed a red card during the USA’s victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina, saw his suspension overturned on Sunday. This decision followed President Donald Trump’s personal request to FIFA president Gianni Infantino to reconsider. The Belgian federation expressed surprise at FIFA’s choice to pause the ban for a year.

Belgium coach Rudi Garcia voiced discontent with FIFA’s decision during a media session on Sunday. Referring humorously to the timing and decision, Garcia remarked, “I thought the World Cup was in July, not April. It’s now April Fools,” using FIFA’s interpreting app for his comments. He emphasized defending the sport over the national team or federation.

The Athletic noted Belgium’s request for a detailed rationale for the decision reversal, which was not publicly disclosed. However, FIFA’s disciplinary committee does not have to release such details.

Balogun is the USA’s top scorer in this World Cup with three goals. His inclusion in the lineup significantly strengthens the American team’s chances of reaching the quarterfinals.
