Ben Simmons is receiving another chance to showcase his talents in the NBA. His anticipated return with the Sacramento Kings could offer him a more prominent role than initially expected. Simmons, who missed the entire 2025-26 season, is reportedly set to start in the Kings’ opening game against the Los Angeles Clippers on October 21.
Marc J. Spears of Andscape reported Simmons is expected to start alongside rookie guard Darius Acuff. This decision comes shortly after Simmons returned to NBA action in a preseason game against the Golden State Warriors. During the Kings’ 111-106 loss, Simmons scored seven points and had one assist in nine minutes of play. While his playing time was limited, it marked a significant moment for a player absent from the NBA since April 2025.
Importantly, Sacramento placed Simmons in the starting lineup for his comeback game. This move indicates the team’s potential plans for utilizing him throughout the season. For Simmons, this marks another chapter in a career filled with both impressive achievements and setbacks.
The former No. 1 pick joined the NBA with high expectations after being drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers in 2016. In his early years, Simmons proved his versatility, earning three All-Star selections and gaining recognition for his passing, rebounding, and defense.
However, injuries and irregular offensive performance have altered his career trajectory. After leaving Philadelphia, Simmons struggled to find his form with the Brooklyn Nets and Los Angeles Clippers. Persistent back and knee issues affected his availability, causing him to miss the entire 2025-26 NBA season.
“Ben can do everything,” said Kings head coach Doug Christie.
Now, the Kings are offering him a chance to rejuvenate his career. They signed Simmons to a one-year, $3.5 million contract in September after general manager Scott Perry assessed him in a workout in Miami. Coming off a lackluster 22-60 season, Sacramento is aiming to boost competitiveness in the Western Conference.
Though Simmons may not be the player who once propelled Philadelphia to playoff contention, his experience and versatility could be crucial for Sacramento. At 6-foot-10, Simmons excels at ball handling, initiating offense, and defending multiple positions. These abilities could be especially valuable alongside Acuff, who is preparing for his rookie season.
Sacramento can relieve Acuff of some playmaking duties by utilizing Simmons as an organizer, allowing the rookie to concentrate on scoring and skill development. Acuff has expressed enthusiasm about playing with Simmons, praising his speed and leadership.
While earning a starting role is a significant milestone, the primary challenge for Simmons is health and consistent contribution. He has not played more than 51 regular-season games since the 2020-21 season with Philadelphia. Spears reports Simmons aims to participate in all 82 games this season, an ambitious target given his history of injuries.
The Kings plan to gradually increase Simmons’ workload during the remaining preseason games, boosting his conditioning for the regular season. Simmons conveyed confidence and encouragement by his progress after his initial return.
A healthy Simmons could offer valuable experience to a Sacramento team seeking to redefine itself. However, maintaining health and performance remains uncertain. The Kings are betting on a player once deemed among the NBA’s most promising young talents. If Simmons secures a steady starting position and stays fit, his comeback could become a standout story in the upcoming season.
