Construction is underway for BJ’s Wholesale Club in Portage, with a ceremonial groundbreaking held recently. The store spans 100,000 square feet and will employ 100 to 150 people, both full-time and part-time, according to spokesperson Ryan Carney. BJ’s was established over 40 years ago in Massachusetts, named after Beverly Jean, the daughter of one of its founders. Portage, known as the third-largest city in Northwest Indiana and bordering the Chicago area market, was selected due to its ongoing growth.
Across Airport Road, a new Target store is also being built. Dan Botich, the Portage Redevelopment Director, noted the area’s development driven by residential demand. Several new subdivisions will add 1,200 homes in the next three to five years, with other residential projects in planning. Aligning with Mayor Austin Bonta’s vision for city growth, a new fire station location has been included in development plans.
Botich emphasized Portage’s strategic position amid rising industry, residential, and commercial demand. Calls from companies in Illinois reflect interest due to the influx of Illinois residents and businesses. Andy Maletta, Executive Director of the Portage Economic Development Corp., mentioned the area’s attraction to new restaurants due to its favorable growth and income levels.
The U.S. 6 corridor is a prime location for commercial development, spurred by the addition of BJ’s. With no wholesale warehouses like Costco or Sam’s Club in Porter County, BJ’s entry is anticipated with excitement. The chain now operates 267 stores, expanding westward, and plans to open 25 to 30 new clubs every two years.
BJ’s differentiates itself with a robust grocery section, appealing to members who can save up to 20% on groceries. Memberships begin at $40 annually. The company plans to contribute to the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana as part of its community engagement efforts.
