Flat lighting and dull cinematography are common in today’s film and TV scene, making vibrant storytelling rarer. Boots Riley, known for his satirical style, challenges this trend with his latest film, I Love Boosters. This production is a vivid departure from the norm, merging color with narrative.
The film centers on three women—played by Keke Palmer, Taylour Paige, and Naomi Ackie—who engage in shoplifting designer clothes across the Bay Area. Their target is Metro Design stores, owned by billionaire Christie Smith, portrayed by Demi Moore.
The movie oscillates between live-action gags reminiscent of Looney Tunes and sharp social commentary, maintaining coherence under Riley’s direction. Its complexity suggests multiple viewings to grasp the whirlwind of events entirely.
One scene may feature a demon absorbing souls, while another addresses the working class’s struggle against exploitative elites. This stylistic blend showcases striking sets and costumes, while Tune-Yards enrich the experience with the memorable Hi-Yo
leitmotif.
Despite numerous strengths, I Love Boosters faces minor shortcomings. Moore’s portrayal of Smith lacks the exaggerated flair needed for a compelling villain. Additionally, some gags, particularly in the final act, did not resonate as intended. Riley’s ambitious narrative pace may explain these moments.
Although not perfect, the film concludes positively, delivering a hopeful message amidst its satire. It contrasts with typical social satires, offering a refreshing, buoyant approach.
From a creative perspective, I Love Boosters stands out this year. Riley’s unique talent and vision create a dynamic, fast-paced experience worth exploring.
Verdict: 7/10
