Warner Bros. faced a setback with the release of ‘Supergirl’, which failed to compete with Disney’s ‘Toy Story 5’ at the box office. ‘Toy Story 5’ maintained its lead with $70 million in domestic sales and added $89.1 million internationally, accumulating $585 million globally, marking one of the year’s biggest hits.
‘Supergirl’, however, opened to $38 million in the U.S. and Canada, alongside $30 million overseas. Directed by Craig Gillespie, the film is the second release under James Gunn and Peter Safran’s leadership of DC Studios. Their previous release, ‘Superman’, grossed $618 million worldwide, but ‘Supergirl’ disappointed critics and audiences alike. Rotten Tomatoes rated it 56% fresh, and it received a ‘B-‘ CinemaScore.
This poor debut trails behind other DC films like ‘The Flash’ with $55 million and ‘The Green Lantern’ with $53 million, despite being slightly ahead of ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ with $37.7 million. According to David A. Gross of FranchiseRe, superhero movies have declined post-pandemic, with the genre’s box office falling by approximately $3.5 billion annually from 2017-2019. After successes like ‘Wonder Woman’ and ‘Captain Marvel’, female-led superhero films have also seen downturns. Gross highlighted the unexpected, complete loss of interest in these films.
The $170 million ‘Supergirl’ faced setbacks amid Warner Bros. Discovery’s pending acquisition by Paramount Skydance. Paramount’s David Ellison has met with Gunn and Safran. DC’s next release will be ‘Clayface’ in October, with Gunn’s ‘Man of Tomorrow’ slated for July 2027. Milly Alcock stars in ‘Supergirl’ as Lara Zor-El, known more for her partying than heroics.
In other releases, ‘Jackass: Best and Last’ from Paramount Pictures opened with $8.4 million, a good result given its $10 million budget. Olivia Wilde’s ‘The Invite’ opened with $379,104 across seven screens, marking an excellent per-screen average of $54,158. A24 hopes to expand its success starting July 10. Meanwhile, ‘Obsession’, a horror film, maintained surprising strength with $9.8 million in its seventh weekend, totaling $233.9 million domestically.
On the other hand, Steven Spielberg’s ‘Disclosure Day’ dropped to fifth place with $8.1 million in its third weekend, grossing $193.7 million globally.
