In Orchard Park, New York, the Buffalo Bills are making a clear break from O.J. Simpson’s legacy as they transition to their new stadium this season. Chief Operating Officer Pete Guelli announced the decision on Saturday, stating that there will be no mention of Simpson at their new venue.
The decision marks a departure from their previous practice at Highmark Stadium, where Simpson’s name was displayed on the Wall of Fame. Guelli confirmed that Simpson is not considered suitable for inclusion in the team’s new stadium and Family Circle.
Instead of replicating the Wall of Fame, the Bills will honor their history by featuring past stars in a display located in a large gathering area known as the “Family Circle” in front of the new stadium. Simpson’s name will be absent from this tribute.
Simpson, who set numerous records for the Bills and was the first NFL player to rush over 2,000 yards in a season, saw his reputation impacted by accusations related to the murders of his former wife and her male companion in 1994. Though acquitted in the criminal trial, he was found liable for their deaths in a civil case and later served nine years in prison on unrelated charges. Simpson passed away from prostate cancer at 76 in April 2024.
Under previous owner Ralph Wilson, the Bills had distanced themselves from Simpson because of the murder charges. This stance continued after Terry and Kim Pegula acquired the team in 2014. While Simpson occasionally attended games, the team did not acknowledge his presence.
The former Highmark Stadium is currently being demolished. The Bills recently celebrated the opening of their new $2.1 billion facility, also named Highmark Stadium, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
