Caitlin Clark missed her first game of the season when the Indiana Fever faced the Portland Fire on Wednesday. Despite her absence, the Fever secured a 90-73 victory. Concerns arose about her availability for Friday’s game against the Golden State Valkyries. However, Clark returned to the lineup, scoring 22 points to lead Indiana to their third consecutive win.
Clark revealed that her recovery tested her both mentally and physically. She told reporters, “I’m dealing with my confidence. Coming back from injury and having multiple soft tissue injuries in 2025 is a real mental challenge.”

Clark’s promising start in the WNBA faced interruptions due to injuries in 2025. After playing 40 games and winning Rookie of the Year in 2024, she was limited to 13 appearances last season, hindered by a groin strain and ankle bruise.
Her confidence level shifts, particularly in the early season. “Playing against the best players in the world is daunting. Without full confidence by Game 5, situations become tricky,” Clark remarked. In Friday’s game, Clark spent 32 minutes on the court alongside nine assists, narrowly missing a double-double.
She noted the increased physical demands compared to offseason play. “I participated in USA Basketball but not for 32 physical minutes. The difference is significant, yet I feel good overall. It’s about how I feel the next day and improving self-awareness after games,” Clark said.
Clark lay on the court during a WNBA game against the Atlanta Dream in August 2024.
The Fever and Valkyries will play again on Thursday in San Francisco. Paige Bueckers, a Wings rookie, commented on the expectations on Clark, deeming them ‘inhumane’.
Clark speaks about the mental challenge of returning from injury, noting, “I sometimes get in my head, which is natural. I need to be kinder to myself and hope others do too. The experiences can be traumatizing.”
Clark, who does not believe her back soreness will be a long-term issue, said she is working hard on her recovery to stay ready for upcoming games.
Off the court, Clark announced her children’s book, “EXTRAordinary! A Little EXTRA to Reach BIG Dreams,” set for a November release. The book draws on her unique life experiences.
