Chicago Bears fans faced mixed emotions upon seeing franchise quarterback Caleb Williams hobble off the field, assisted by two staff members during Sunday’s loss to the Minnesota Vikings. Initially, many feared a severe, season-ending injury when viewing Williams’ emotional cart ride to the locker room, covered in a towel and gesturing to the crowd.
Head Coach Ben Johnson provided some relief, clarifying Williams’ injury as a right hamstring strain, not season-ending. Williams is now considered “week-to-week.” An MRI on Monday revealed the strain’s extent, and while Johnson does not foresee him practicing this week, Week 3 involvement is not entirely ruled out.
“I don’t quite understand why people immediately thought, ‘Oh my God, it’s his Achilles.’” — Craig Carton
Media personalities, like OutKick’s Craig Carton, reacted to Williams’ response. During “The Craig Carton Show,” Carton commented on the heightened emotions depicted by Williams, comparing his reaction to tearing an Achilles or ACL, which typically garners severe concern due to non-contact injuries. Carton remarked, “The way Caleb reacted, it was extreme, almost theatrical, considering he isn’t facing a season-ending injury.”
Johnson confirmed Williams will miss “some time,” although specific timelines remain unclear. Nonetheless, Carton suggested that Bears fans, known for a solid, gritty cultural identity, are required to support their starting quarterback due to team loyalty, not because he embodies their typical vision of one.
“Caleb Williams, I believe, will become an exceptional quarterback for years to come,” Carton elaborated. “Yet, his dramatic reaction may alienate some fans who cherish traditional toughness represented by icons like Mike Ditka and Brian Urlacher.” Carton acknowledged Williams’ talent while predicting a possible disconnect with some sections of Bears supporters.
The injury, though disappointing during a rainy, sold-out event at Soldier Field, means Williams should return this season. Bears fans can remain hopeful for the team’s prospects despite Williams’ current absence.
