California’s governor race is reaching a decisive moment as voters consider a replacement for Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom. This election will shape the future of a state known for progressive policies and frequent clashes with former President Donald Trump.
As the most populous state in the U.S., California hosts a massive economy that includes Hollywood, Silicon Valley, and the state’s agricultural heartland. The race took a turn in April when Rep. Eric Swalwell exited after allegations of sexual assault, leaving potential candidates scrambling for support.
The Jungle Primary
California’s election process involves a “jungle primary” where every voter receives the same list of candidates. The top two finishers advance to the general election, regardless of their party affiliation.
Recent polls have highlighted Democrat Xavier Becerra and Republican Steve Hilton as leading contenders, each securing roughly 20% support among likely voters. Democrat Tom Steyer follows closely, with other candidates like Republican Chad Bianco and Democrat Katie Porter in the mix.
Xavier Becerra: Democratic Experience
Becerra’s political career spans 35 years, including roles in California and national politics. As a former member of U.S. House Democratic leadership, he became California’s attorney general, succeeding Kamala Harris. His tenure was marked by legal battles against Trump’s administration.
His later role as secretary of Health and Human Services under President Biden is central to his campaign. Yet, he faces criticism from some former colleagues and scrutiny over allegations against an aide. Becerra has backing from labor unions, Planned Parenthood, and Equality California.
Steve Hilton: Republican Challenge
Trump’s endorsement gives Hilton an edge with Republicans, though it’s potentially risky in a state that opposed Trump. Hilton, a conservative commentator and former Fox News host, stresses traditional Republican values like lower taxes and smaller government.
Hilton aims to serve as a check on California’s Democratic majority. He advocates tax-free income up to $100,000 and lower gas prices, contrasting with Chad Bianco’s cultural issue focus.
Tom Steyer: Progressive Populist
Steyer leverages his wealth to push a progressive agenda. Known for climate change advocacy, he spent heavily in the race. Despite lacking elected experience, his anti-corporate stance resonates with some groups like Our Revolution.
His billion-dollar campaign against Trump’s first-term policies and his 2020 presidential bid raised his profile but left questions about his political acumen.
Matt Mahan: Technocratic Approach
San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan integrates his tech-savvy background with moderate Democratic values. Emphasizing problem-solving over political battles, he criticizes state leadership on homelessness and crime.
His support from tech leaders like Sergey Brin and Joe Lonsdale has stirred controversy within the party, resulting in mixed backing.
Katie Porter: Populist Fighter
Porter, a former college professor, gained attention for her no-nonsense questioning of business executives. Her anti-corporate stance aligns with everyday Californians.
However, Porter’s leadership style has faced criticism, with leaked videos showing her in heated interactions. She has publicly apologized and vowed to improve.
Antonio Villaraigosa: Centrist Candidate
Villaraigosa, once Los Angeles’s mayor and a state Assembly speaker, struggles after years out of the spotlight. As a former union organizer, he ran for governor in 2018.
Pitching his extensive political background, he positions himself as a pragmatic alternative focusing on Southern California.
Chad Bianco: Law Enforcement Focus
Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco emphasizes his long career in law enforcement. A staunch Trump supporter, he gained national attention for a controversial election materials probe.
While he frames this as a legitimate investigation, critics label it a nod to conspiracy theories. The state’s Supreme Court intervened, halting the probe.
