Military Engagements Under President Trump’s Second Term
During his first term, President Trump was outspoken against the prolonged military conflicts initiated by his predecessors. He deemed these wars as squanderings of American resources. In 2019, during the State of the Union address, Trump asserted that ‘great nations do not fight endless wars.’
Despite presenting himself as ‘the candidate of peace’ in his re-election campaign, the situation has diverged from this image. Since reassuming office, Trump has engaged the United States in numerous military operations globally. His administration has undertaken missions, including a conflict with Iran and a raid in Venezuela leading to the capture of the Venezuelan president.
The 2025 Somalia Operations
In February 2025, soon after his inauguration, President Trump authorized a series of airstrikes in northern Somalia. These targeted Islamic State operatives and recruits. This maneuver marked the start of intensified efforts in counterterrorism within the Horn of Africa according to Trump’s government.
The military approach under Trump has reflected both strategic counterterrorism tactics and direct military involvement across various regions. Actions such as these illustrate the administration’s commitment to dealing with terrorist threats despite Trump’s initial promises of avoiding lengthy conflicts.
