Prime Minister Mark Carney of Canada has issued a warning about the potential consequences of Alberta’s upcoming referendum on separation from Canada, drawing parallels to Brexit. Carney, who was the governor of the Bank of England during the UK’s 2016 vote to leave the European Union, expressed concerns over the October vote, calling it a ‘dangerous bluff.’
The Alberta referendum, proposed by Premier Danielle Smith, asks whether Albertans wish to remain in Canada or hold a second binding vote to secede. This decision has received criticism from various quarters. Pro-independence advocates feel deprived of an opportunity to pursue full independence, whereas those favoring unity in Canada are shocked by the very idea of the vote.
Carney, speaking in Ottawa, compared the situation to Brexit. He noted that some in the UK viewed the Brexit vote as a strategic move to negotiate better terms with the EU, not a definitive break. ‘They’re still, 10 years later, trying to undo what people didn’t think they were voting for,’ Carney stressed, highlighting the prolonged consequences.
During the Brexit process, Carney had advised against leaving the EU—a stance that some considered political overreach at the time. Post-Brexit, he had to develop monetary policies to stabilize the British pound amidst economic turmoil.
He comes from experience, witnessing firsthand the complexities and challenges of separation referendums and their long-term impacts.
