Since the World Cup started, Cape Verde has gained significant attention. This small nation, located off the west coast of Africa, made its mark by drawing with Spain in its opening match. Further draws against Uruguay and Saudi Arabia advanced Cape Verde to the knockout stage, making it the smallest country to achieve this feat.
Facing Argentina in the round of 32, the match was perceived as a David vs. Goliath scenario. The ranking disparity was the largest in the history of the knockout round. Argentina held the second spot in the world rankings, while Cape Verde ranked 59th. In a gripping match, Argentina won 3-2 in extra time, with a decisive own goal by Diney Borges in the 111th minute.
The game was a confrontation between older soccer figures: Lionel Messi, Argentina’s 39-year-old legend, and Cape Verde’s 40-year-old goalkeeper, Vozinha. Messi quickly took the lead, scoring in the 29th minute with a precise touch and finish that left Vozinha unprepared. This goal marked Messi’s seventh of the tournament and 20th in World Cup history, extending his record.
During the following matches, Messi excelled with a hat trick against Algeria, and goals against Austria and Jordan. On Friday, he nearly scored twice more, but Vozinha’s skillful saves kept the game close. In the 63rd minute, Vozinha foiled Messi’s progress by advancing and stopping his shot, a crucial moment in the game.
Later, Messi attempted a free kick just outside the box. Despite Cape Verde’s defensive setup, Messi curled a shot toward the net’s upper right, only for Vozinha to expertly block it. This match elevated Vozinha’s status; he became known worldwide following his remarkable clean sheet performance against Spain earlier in the tournament.
While Argentina possesses players with experience in top global leagues, Vozinha’s career highlights include stints in Cyprus and Slovakia. He has represented Cape Verde since 2012 but only entered the World Cup spotlight with his standout defense against Spain.
In extra time, Lisandro Martínez scored for Argentina, taking advantage of a ball rebounding off a corner. Cape Verde equalized with Sidny Lopes Cabral’s remarkable shot from 26 yards out that found the top right corner.
Despite Vozinha’s efforts, Argentina secured the win with the own goal following an Argentine attack. By the match’s end, what seemed an insurmountable ranking difference was a narrow one-goal victory. This memorable encounter illustrated World Cup history through the performances of two notable players.
