Washington’s Historic Fourth of July Fireworks Show
Washington — This Independence Day, a spectacular fireworks display will light up the skies over Washington, D.C., promising an unprecedented celebration. When the sun sets on July 4th, 850,000 fireworks are set to dazzle spectators for a 40-minute performance, potentially marking the largest show of its kind ever attempted. The event honors America’s 250th birthday.
Pyrotecnico, a company with extensive experience in executing large-scale events such as Super Bowls and major concerts, will lead this ambitious show. Rocco Vitale, president of Pyrotecnico, shared with CBS News, “It is the biggest show that we’ve done.” He recalls his early memories with fireworks tied to Fourth of July celebrations, particularly in Washington, D.C.
Since January, Pyrotecnico has been diligently preparing for this event. Computer simulations have orchestrated the display, transitioning now to the live execution phase. Vitale offered an exclusive insight into their preparations, which include deploying eight barges along the Potomac River to serve as launching pads. Each barge is equipped with GPS and communication systems to ensure precise timing and coordination during the display.
The fireworks are part of the “Salute to America 250 Celebration & Fireworks” on the National Mall, organized by Freedom 250. At 9:45 p.m. Eastern Time, President Trump is expected to deliver remarks, followed by the fireworks at 10:45 p.m. A massive crowd is anticipated to witness this historic occasion.
For those unable to attend in person, CBS offers “The Great American Block Party 250,” a primetime special on Saturday, July 4, at 8 p.m. ET. Hosted by Tony Dokoupil of CBS Evening News and Nischelle Turner from Entertainment Tonight, the broadcast will feature live musical performances and celebrations across the nation, culminating in the extraordinary fireworks display over Washington, D.C. Viewers can watch live on CBS or stream via Paramount+ and CBS News 24/7.
