Carlos Correa’s Potential Position Shift as Playoffs Approach

The Houston Astros, in pursuit of an American League playoff berth, may soon see Carlos Correa return from an ankle injury. Out since May, the seasoned player’s comeback is expected within weeks, but possibly in a new infield position.

Correa, renowned for his defensive prowess, has taken ground balls at second base during his rehabilitation in Florida, as reported by MLB.com’s Brian McTaggart. This could be significant since Correa’s career includes a Platinum Glove win at shortstop in 2021 before transitioning to third base last season. Remarkably, he has never played second base in his 12-year MLB journey.

“Correa has never played an inning at second,” McTaggart highlighted.

The strategic move is to keep Isaac Paredes at third base while repositioning Jose Altuve from second base. Paredes has been a standout for Houston this season with 3.9 WAR and 21 home runs. Conversely, Altuve has shown diminishing defensive skills at second base at 36 years of age. Correa’s superior defensive capabilities compared to Paredes and Altuve make him a valuable asset at either infield spot.

One concern for the Astros revolves around relocating Altuve to designated hitter, leading to Yordan Alvarez playing left field. The prospect brings potential for physical strain on Alvarez, known for his less agile field performance.

The Astros need immediate results to secure their playoff position as competition is fierce with the Texas Rangers in the AL West standing. Experimentation with Correa’s positioning must yield prompt success; otherwise, Correa’s October might be spent watching the playoffs from home.
