Before acquiring a studio, Ro$ama began his musical journey with a PlayStation and a cassette recorder, surrounded by childhood friends in Paris, Texas. In 2009, they used the instrumentals from the game 50 Cent: Blood in the Sand to fuel their creativity. Once the game was completed, it offered all the instrumentals, allowing Ro$ama to position the television next to the recorder, press play, and start freestyling at the age of nine. The beats mattered little to him. Music became a family tradition, with reunions turning into informal freestyle battles. Relatives expected him to perform during gatherings, a practice that followed him into adulthood.
A Family Name Finds Its Sound
Those early experiences now resonate through My Forte, his newly released solo album. The title connects his musical ability to his maternal lineage. Ro$ama explained, “Forte is my mama’s last name,” highlighting how the word’s musical meaning and its association with a person’s strongest skill informed a deeply personal concept. The coincidence provided Ro$ama with a framework to address varied subjects while showcasing his range. The album’s 20-song scale allows Ro$ama to move among reflection, boasting, and regional storytelling, aligning with his purpose: “I wanted to tackle different topics and skill-based songs to demonstrate my versatility.”
Writing Backward, Landing Forward
Ro$ama’s ambitions are influenced by artists who treated rap as a proving ground, including Lil Wayne, T.I., DMX, the Notorious B.I.G., Tupac Shakur, Nipsey Hussle, and Ludacris. Wayne’s wordplay set a demanding benchmark for Ro$ama: “I love how he played with words and made you think,” inspiring him to match or surpass Wayne’s storytelling prowess. His creative process begins with a beat suggesting the emotional direction, but often his bars emerge from their destination and progress backward. Ro$ama stated, “I write backwards,” finding the last bar of a four-bar setup and then constructing the previous bars to intensify the impact. The fixed ending allows the setup to tighten the approach. This method explains why his verses possess architectural qualities, with similes and layered meanings arranged to maximize impact while maintaining narrative flow.
Two Sides of the Story
On “E.T.,” a track showcasing his craft, a beat switch helps Ro$ama maintain a personal story across two energies. The slower initial beat allowed him to develop a narrative, while the switch provided an opportunity to accelerate without losing the thread. “When the beat switched, I recognized I could increase the energy and keep the story intact,” Ro$ama explained. Another track, “93,” reflects on conditions surrounding his hometown, whereas “E.T.” captures his current life stage and his highs and lows. Together, these songs illustrate Ro$ama’s ability to navigate between autobiography and community observation. Even when the album primarily showcases skill, it remains rooted in lived experience. This approach extended into film music when Ro$ama contributed to “BEAST MODE (Godzilla x Kong).” He previewed the film, visualized its scale, and enhanced the energy of BigXthaPlug’s verse, aiming to surpass it while discussing the movie.
From the Room to the Center
The collaborative project 6WA elevated Ro$ama’s platform, changing audience perceptions. “I felt like I was in the room, but unnoticed,” he shared. Following its February 2026 release, listeners began connecting his voice with the artist. He described 6WA as a tryout whose success set expectations for future projects. He likened it to preseason, contrasting it with his current endeavors: “Now I have your attention. Let’s see my performance during the regular season.” At Rolling Loud, he demonstrated this shift by bringing BigXthaPlug into his performance, reversing their typical arrangement. “Instead of X introducing me, I brought him out,” he noted, expressing gratitude for the symbolic moment where an overlooked artist now controlled the invitation.
With My Forte, Ro$ama intends for listeners familiar with his collaborative work to experience the full range he developed during early cassette-tape sessions in Paris, Texas. “I want to demonstrate my versatility,” he conveyed, emphasizing his determination and ambition. Listen to My Forte now.
