iO Theater, renowned for long-form improv in Chicago, marks its 45th anniversary with a three-day celebration from November 5 to 7. Initially founded in 1981 as ImprovOlympic by Charna Halpern and David Shepherd, the theater started with team-based comedy until a legal notice from the International Olympic Committee necessitated a name change.
After Shepherd departed in the 1980s, Halpern teamed up with Del Close to focus on long-form, storytelling-based improv, particularly the ‘Harold’ format, where seemingly unrelated scenes come together to create a narrative. According to Brad Pike, iO’s creative director and a member of the Harold team Devil’s Daughter, this art form has evolved significantly over the years, influencing the theme of IO45.
The event showcases the growth of the theater community, recognizing both veteran performers who pioneered the long-form improv and newer talents advancing the art form. Historically perceived as a ‘boys’ club,’ the theater now mirrors the diverse world outside, featuring representations from different voices and backgrounds.
IO45 celebrates the performers sustaining the theater’s nightly shows rather than solely spotlighting alumni who transitioned to screen fame. Featured performers include Improvised Jane Austen, Escándalo, and Stir Friday Night, highlighting diversity in comedy. Stir Friday Night, noted for its Asian American comedians, has been integral to iO, performing in major events and hosting monthly AAPI-focused jams.
Performances during IO45 include ‘The Scene with T.J. Jagodowski,’ ‘3 Square’ featuring John Lutz, Peter Grosz, Rob Janas, and ‘Frank Booth,’ a ’90s Harold team. Additional events include a stand-up by Maggie Winters and a panel with Charna Halpern and early iO performers. Although Halpern no longer runs the theater, her legacy persists.
Brad Pike emphasizes that iO’s true strength lies in its talented community, irreplaceable and integral to its identity. The authenticity and spontaneity of improv contrast sharply with the scripted nature of sketch shows, offering a unique, live experience for audiences.
