USC Announces New Provost
David Madigan, a statistician and former provost at Northeastern University, has been named the chief academic officer at the University of Southern California (USC). Madigan, 63, will officially become provost and executive vice president for academic affairs on October 13, a major appointment in President Beong-Soo Kim’s first year.
Challenges and AI Integration
Madigan takes on his new role as USC addresses multiple challenges. These include emerging from a financial crisis, engaging with faculty union activities, and contending with political and funding pressures. Rapid advances in artificial intelligence are also influencing how education and research are conducted.
“I really believe in the power of the great American research universities,” Madigan stated in an interview. He emphasized the importance of restoring public trust in higher education.
Recent federal cuts have posed challenges, yet Madigan believes USC’s adaptability positions it to lead change.
USC’s Financial and Union Context
Efforts to manage a budget deficit exceeding $200 million led to hiring freezes and layoffs, including roughly 1,000 workers. Despite a majority vote for unionization under United Faculty-UAW, USC has contested the result, citing faculty management rights.
Facing External Pressures
Like other research universities, USC faces challenges from federal policies mandating changes to research funding and diversity programs. The university did not sign a White House compact restricting international enrollment.
Embracing Artificial Intelligence
USC is heavily investing in AI. A prominent $200 million donation by trustee Mark Stevens and his wife, Mary, aims to integrate AI into multiple disciplines. USC has launched its first undergraduate AI degree to adapt to AI’s transformational role in teaching and research.
Madigan noted the potential of AI to personalize learning, while cautioning about the absence of safeguards.
Madigan’s Background and Experience
A native of Ireland, Madigan studied mathematics and statistics at Trinity College Dublin. His career spans insurance, technology, academia, and research in Bayesian statistics and drug safety.
He previously worked at the University of Washington and served as dean at Rutgers University and Columbia University. At Northeastern University, he managed a range of academic units and initiatives.
Commitment to Academic Freedom
Madigan expressed strong support for academic freedom and free speech. He stated the importance of expressing diverse ideas in academia, aligning with principles he upheld during protests at Northeastern.
Leadership Transition
Madigan succeeds Andrew Guzman, who will rejoin the Gould School of Law faculty. Guzman faced similar issues related to free speech and campus protests during his tenure.
In addition, USC announced Megan Jordan as permanent chief communications officer. Jordan has been with USC since 2024 and is also an alumna and adjunct professor at the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism.
