Tuesday marked a special occasion at Scott Elementary School in Naperville, as the school community celebrated the return of their beloved head custodian, Dean Baki, following a six-month absence due to a medical emergency. The school welcomed Baki back with a lively morning event featuring upbeat music from a portable speaker, noisemakers, and blue-and-yellow pom poms, all under balloons that decorated the drop-off area.
Amidst the celebration, the school’s principal, Tracey Ratner, emphasized the importance of showing appreciation for Mr. Dean, who is affectionately known by both students and staff. ‘It’s important that he knows how much he means to all of us,’ Ratner stated. ‘We wanted to make sure it was really special and he felt welcomed.’
Mr. Dean’s Health Ordeal
In February, Baki experienced a severe health issue when he noticed a rise in body temperature upon his arrival at work. With his cell phone malfunctioning, he managed to drive himself to Edward Hospital in Naperville. Upon checking in, he collapsed, revealing that his arteries were nearly completely clogged, and he was given a low chance of survival.
Mr. Dean’s recovery was considered miraculous, and he spent months in the hospital and rehabilitation. Despite the ordeal, Baki expressed his desire to return to work, stating, ‘This is the place I belong. This is my home. The teachers, the kids, they are amazing people.’
The heartfelt welcome back for Baki included hugs, high fives, and fist bumps from students and parents alike. A sign declaring him ‘Super Dean’ was displayed at the front of the school, showcasing the school community’s appreciation.
During his absence, the Scott Elementary staff and students stayed in touch with Baki and his family. Cards and blankets were made to wish him well, and students frequently asked about his condition. Ratner noted, ‘He really is the heart of our school.’
Baki’s rapport with the school community extends beyond his duties as custodian. He attends special events like the school’s annual Veterans Day assembly, and recently, an end-of-year assembly where students energetically chanted his name.
Baki remains dedicated to Scott Elementary, rejecting retirement with his now good health. He said, ‘If the kids need help, I want to help.’ The sentiment of appreciation from both students and staff was echoed by fourth-graders Jeffrey Chiros, Peyton Stelzer, and Daniel Beil, who all expressed their happiness for Mr. Dean’s return.
