The jury in Lindsay Clancy’s murder trial resumed deliberations for a fifth day in Massachusetts. This followed their notification of being deadlocked. The jury, composed of nine women and three men, has deliberated for approximately 25 hours since receiving the case last Thursday in Plymouth Superior Court.
On Tuesday morning, the jury informed Judge William Sullivan they couldn’t reach a unanimous decision. He instructed them to continue discussions. Clancy faces charges for the first-degree murders of her three children—5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 8-month-old Callan. These tragic events occurred on January 24, 2023, in their Duxbury home.
Jurors have five options: not guilty by reason of insanity, not guilty, first-degree murder, second-degree murder, or manslaughter. A hung jury may lead to a mistrial. Recent cases in Massachusetts have witnessed similar occurrences, such as the trial of Emanuel Lopes in 2023 and Karen Read’s first trial in 2024.
Clancy’s attorney, Kevin Reddington, claims she wasn’t criminally responsible, citing overmedication and postpartum psychosis. Prosecutors argued Clancy planned the killings, distinguishing right from wrong in her actions.
WBZ-TV legal analyst Jennifer Roman noted the uncertainties within the jury room. She suggested they might grapple with insanity verdict options or face indecisiveness regarding charges.
Reddington criticized Plymouth District Attorney Tim Cruz for the first-degree murder charge, necessitating a jury trial. A second-degree murder charge could have enabled a plea deal, allowing for judicial judgment.
Woman Accused of Filming Jurors
A disruption ensued with the arrest of Dawn Light, 56, accused of filming jurors. She was arraigned in court on an intimidation of jurors charge, with a not guilty plea entered on her behalf. Light’s attorney defended her actions, claiming she attempted to photograph Lindsay Clancy, not record jurors. Light was released and is scheduled to return to court on October 15.
If the jury convicts Clancy of any murder or manslaughter charges, she faces imprisonment. A not guilty verdict by reason of insanity mandates her stay at Tewksbury State Hospital, subject to case reviews.
