Independence Day celebrations in the U.S. are set to be larger and more spectacular as the nation marks its 250th anniversary. Events are designed to foster unity despite political differences, with planners expanding traditional activities and introducing new ones.

Major Celebrations Across the Country

Starting Friday, cities will host various festivities to kick off the celebrations. Key highlights include:

• Mount Rushmore, South Dakota: Fireworks displays to commemorate the occasion.
• Washington, D.C.: The National Symphony Orchestra and the Choral Arts Society of Washington will perform at the Capitol. Meanwhile, in Times Square, a series of ball drops will mark the event.

Events in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic

• New York City: Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks celebrate the 50th anniversary, visible over iconic locations like the Brooklyn Bridge.
• Boston, Massachusetts: The Boston Harborfest spans three days, concluding with the Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular.
• Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: Performances by Christina Aguilera, Jill Scott, Will Smith, and DJ Jazzy Jeff at the One Philly: Unity Concert for America.
• Washington, D.C.: ‘A Capitol Fourth’ features performances and fireworks on the Capitol’s West Lawn, broadcast on PBS.
