“For your safety, please back away from the stage,” warned a voice over the speakers at the Great American State Fair’s main stage during a hot day on the National Mall.

It was July 4, the busiest day at the fair after a week marked by low attendance and early closure due to heat and drizzly rain. The event, organized by Freedom 250—a private-public group—was a project President Donald Trump was deeply invested in. It aimed to be a highlight of his semiquincentennial celebrations, including a UFC cage match on the White House lawn for Trump’s 80th birthday.

Despite initial criticism from the liberal media for both the fair and its poor turnout, on the day of the anniversary, the venue was filled with attendees. Trump’s supporters seemed to have momentarily overcome the struggles faced during the fair’s run.
